The catapult originated in ancient China’s Spring and Autumn period and in ancient Greece. It’s essentially a giant lever: one end holds a counterweight, the other a sling with a stone. When released, stored potential energy becomes kinetic energy, hurling the projectile. Before cannons, catapults were the ultimate siege weapon used to destroy walls and towers or launch fire and disease into cities.
